By the shores of Gitchee Gumee is a great place for the North Woods, Great Lakes Master Naturalist Course! We will base this Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory-sponsored course at Hartley Nature Center in Duluth, Minnesota, but we will also take advantage of several other locations in the Duluth area. Join us and travel through the transition from the ice and snow of winter into the greening spring in the Northwoods! Explore the fascinating geology, plant and animal communities, inland lakes and bogs, ecology and human interactions of the North Woods, as well as how Lake Superior impacts and interacts with these ecosystems.
The course will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. over five Saturdays beginning March 1 and ending May 3, 2025. This course offers guest speakers and unique experiences in a beautiful location, with so many amazing places to explore nearby. Field trips will be incorporated into the scheduled class days, so regardless of the weather, expect that there will be outdoor discovery in every class session! By the end of the course, participants will complete a capstone project of their choice in small groups.

North Woods, Great Lakes covers topics of geology, glaciers, water, wildlife, humans, ecology, and botany using a variety of teaching techniques, ranging from lectures, classroom discussions, field trips, fieldwork, small group work and readings.
Participants must complete the full 40 hours of training to become a certified Minnesota Master Naturalist Volunteer.
Each participant must complete a group capstone project. Participants will choose a capstone that they can complete before finishing the course.
